Gingerbread is a great dessert for the holidays. I love the spices in gingerbread. This is an old recipe from my grandmother that is extremely moist and tasty. A great crowd pleaser on a cold winters night.

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 cup dark molasses
  • 3/4 cup hot water
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • dash of salt
  • whipped cream to serve with cake

Preheat oven to 350°

Measure all ingredients except the whipped cream into a large mixing bowl. Blend on a low speed for about 1 minute making sure to scrape the sides of the bowl.

Beat on a higher speed scraping occasionally. The mixture should be very light and airy when you are doing mixing.

Pour into a greased pan.

Bake for 50 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Serve warm with whipped cream on top.
