Homemade Croutons

Making your own croûtons is very easy. My mother-in-law taught me how to do it and once you taste a homemade croûton, it is hard to eat a store bought one again. Making croûtons is also a great way to use up some stale bread or the hulls of the bread that no one really likes to eat anyway. Another bonus to making your own is that you can use which every seasonings you prefer. They taste great sprinkled over some homemade soup too!!

Ingredients

  • bread - cut into squares
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 2 tbsp Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • salt & pepper to taste

Directions

Cut bread into cubes. You can use stale bread for this one. It is a great time to use to the ends of all the bread that no one will eat up.

Oven Method:

Toss all of the spices and bread in a large bowl with the oil to coat evenly. Spread a single layer on a baking sheet and bake in a 350° oven until crispy, stirring every few minutes.

Skillet Method:
Toss all of the spices and bread in a large bowl to coat evenly. Heat the oil in a large skillet and add the bread. Stir the bread until crispy on all sides.

Serve on a salad or some homemade soup. You can alter the spices to make them taste the way you like them. Try adding some grilling spices or different salts for a new flavor!
